Adventures in the Norwegian Fjords

Get immersed in western Norway’s Viking culture, ancient ruins, and fjord and mountain landscape by bus, boat and cable car.

About Your Trip

Embrace your adventurous side as you journey from Bergen through the western Norwegian countryside — an untamed terrain of dense forests, sweeping fjords and rugged hills — to the King of the Fjords in Sognefjord. While there, you’ll experience a side of Viking culture beyond its well-known seafaring exploits: the skill of producing quern stones and millstones. At Millstone Park, you’ll walk around an open-air museum to see the relatively untouched and intact remains of stone quarries from the Viking Age. Then, you’ll explore a restored complex of watermills and gristmills, and ruins from a Viking Parliament. On the way to your accommodations in Forde, stop at impressive waterfalls.

The next day, you’ll travel northeast to Loen for a sky lift ride over the Nordfjord landscape of water, plateaus, valleys and mountains to the summit of Mt. Hoven — popular for hikers and hang gliders in the summer and snowboarders in the winter. Then, get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience when you stop to enjoy your lunch 3,317 feet (1,011 meters) above sea level! (Lunch is at your own expense.) You’ll also see the building site of a replica of Myklebust, a Viking ship destroyed in 870. It gives you a great idea on what it was like to be a rugged Norseman sailing the waters during the Iron Ages.

After your ferry ride back to Bergen, see some of the city’s highlights on a guided walking tour. Start at the Blue Stone, a popular meeting place, and then the impressive National Scene theater. You’ll also see sites in UNESCO-protected Bryggen such as Bergenhus Fortress, St. Mary’s Church and a rose garden.

What we love:
• The quarries scattered throughout Hyllestad are great examples of the Viking Age culture that centered around mass production of hand-turned quern stones, water-turned millstones and, eventually, stone crosses.
• The remains of Myklebust Viking ship were found in 1874 under burial mounds probably with the body of King Audbjorn of the Fjords. This ship was deemed to be the largest of its kind to be excavated.
• Norway boasts 7 distinct areas listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the historic harbor district of Bryggen near your hotel.

Destination

Bergen, Norway, has been inhabited since the 11th century, when a flourishing trading village was established in the area. Bryggen is the name of the antique quayside and was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Another important place in the region, the Institute of Marine Research, is Europe’s 2nd-largest academy dedicated to aquatic exploration. Bergen is known as an academic and a cultural center in western Norway, and boasts leading schools of economics and business.

Small in size but big in personality, Forde is tucked away in western Norway within a landscape of valleys, mountains, lakes and glaciers. Its prominence on Fordfjorden — a fjord of incomparable beauty, measuring 22 miles (36 kilometers) long — lures visitors from far and wide.
